{"id":74457,"date":"2024-12-17T11:37:43","date_gmt":"2024-12-17T16:37:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fhps.net\/?page_id=74457"},"modified":"2025-07-30T16:58:07","modified_gmt":"2025-07-30T20:58:07","slug":"school-support-dogs-fhps-pride-pups","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.fhps.net\/school-support-dogs-fhps-pride-pups\/","title":{"rendered":"School Support Dogs: FHPS PRIDE Pups"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"district-thin-rounded-leaf-heading\">Overview of the PRIDE PUP Program<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FHPS PRIDE Pup program began in 2023 after many months of planning, research, and community partnership. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The purpose of Forest Hills PRIDE Pups is to offer our students and staff social-emotional support, companionship, and comfort during times of calm and times of distress. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They get their name from the Forest Hills PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) acronym and many PRIDE Pups are a significant part of their school behavior and student celebration systems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research indicates that school support dog programs provide significant benefits for students and staff. They act as a tool for a school administrator, counselor, teacher, or other facility staff member to foster a safe and effective environment for students to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. School support dogs are highly trained animals with a deep love for people. They do not perform specific tasks or support individuals but rather offer comfort and companionship to all who come in contact with them. Forest Hills Public Schools PRIDE Pups will provide support for mainstream and special education students as well as staff members in the following ways:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decrease stress, anxiety, and burnout<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crisis support for the entire district<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create an increased sense of belonging and encourage school culture and climate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Support students with social skill development, emotional regulation, and sensory input<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide opportunities for connection, comfort, and companionship<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Develop positive human-animal interactions in a safe environment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Encourage literacy development through dog-student reading buddy opportunities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide the opportunity for student tasks and rewards within the PBIS framework<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Forest Hills Public Schools partners with Kim Heys of Interquest CARES who provides all training for staff and the dogs. Each PRIDE Pup has a school handler(s) and a host family. The school handler(s) manages the dog during school hours and facilitates student support, social-emotional groups, and classroom visits. Host families care for the dogs when they are not working at school. Host families are FHPS staff members who commit to providing a loving home, transporting the dog to school, and managing all healthcare-related appointments.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"district-thin-rounded-leaf-heading\">Meet the FHPS PRIDE Pups: Our Pack<\/h2>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; She was born on March 1, 2023. And guess what?! Her brother, Bronx, is also a PRIDE Pup! Jersey works at Ada Vista Elementary School, the FHPS Spanish immersion program. In case you are wondering\u2026 YES, Jersey is bilingual! She understands a handful of commands in Spanish as she works alongside Laura Schuler.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After school, Jersey is so excited to go home that she carries her own leash in her mouth as she prances out to the car with her host mom, Sharlynn Boersma. Jersey loves belly rubs and digging holes in the yard at her host home. She also loves to watch the wildlife in the backyard! jersey can often be found sleeping on the job and snoring&#8230;loudly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"su-spoiler su-spoiler-style-fancy su-spoiler-icon-caret su-spoiler-closed\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" data-anchor-in-url=\"no\"><div class=\"su-spoiler-title\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"su-spoiler-icon\"><\/span>Bronx - Knapp Forest<\/div><div class=\"su-spoiler-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bronx is a young golden\/labrador retriever mix. His birthday is March 1st, 2023, and his littermate, Jersey, is also a PRIDE Pup. Bronx loves getting together with the other PRIDE Pups. He spends most of his days in the Knapp Forest library with Lisa Doctor, who is his handler at school. He loves being in the library, where he gets a chance to see every student every week. More students = more belly rubs! He visits classrooms and helps out students wherever they happen to be when they need him. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bronx is also hosted by the Doctor family, so after school, he heads home with Mrs. Doctor. When they arrive home, Bronx can hardly wait to hop out of the car and get busy playing with his little puppy sister, Lulu. Bronx\u2019s favorite things are fetching tennis balls, treats of all kinds, and belly rubs. His birthday is May 31, 2022, and Rubble started working at Meadow Brook on April 22, 2024. He is happy that his two brothers, Kai and Chase, are also working in Forest Hills! Rubble loves sitting in the main foyer to greet all of the students each morning, cheering up students when they\u2019re feeling sad, and he <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loves when students read books to him. Everyone loves his big toothy smile. Rubble brings so much joy to the students and staff at Meadow Brook! <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rubble lives with Meghan Davis and her pup Higgins.
