{"id":66422,"date":"2022-06-02T12:08:50","date_gmt":"2022-06-02T16:08:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fhps.net\/?page_id=66422"},"modified":"2025-06-19T08:17:42","modified_gmt":"2025-06-19T12:17:42","slug":"work-permits","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.fhps.net\/district\/work-permits\/","title":{"rendered":"Work Permits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Public Act 90 of 1978, the Youth Employment Standards Act (YESA), as amended, defines a minor as someone who is less than 18 years of age, including but not limited to employees, volunteers, independent contractors, and performing artists.<\/p>\n<p>Minors under 18 years of age must obtain a work permit or a written agreement or contract entered into between the employer and the governing school district, public school academy, or nonpublic school before starting work.\u00a0 Work permits can be obtained from the state of Michigan school issuing officer (the chief administrator of a school district, intermediate school district, etc.) the minor attends or the school district where the minor will be employed. If the minor changes jobs, a new work permit is required for the new employer.\u00a0 A work permit may be revoked for poor academic performance. A work permit is required even if the minor is home\/cyber\/virtual\/online schooled, does not attend school, or out-of-state resident.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/leo\/bureaus-agencies\/ber\/wage-and-hour\/youth-employment-standards-act-yesa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">More information about YESA is available on Michigan.gov<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"district-thin-rounded-leaf-heading\">Who Needs A Work Permit (Including Summer)<\/h2>\n<p>Minors under the age of 18 are required to have a work permit prior to starting work.<\/p>\n<p>Minors under the age of 18 cannot be employed or permitted to work, with or without pay, or volunteer until the person, company, business, firm, or corporation proposing to employ the minor obtains and keeps on file at the minor&#8217;s place of employment (work location) a current and valid age-appropriate work permit, which has been issued by a state of Michigan issuing officer of the school district, intermediate school district, public school academy or nonpublic school prior to starting work.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"district-thin-rounded-leaf-heading\">Forms<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/leo\/-\/media\/Project\/Websites\/leo\/Documents\/WAGE-HOUR\/Work-Permits\/CA6FORM_674719.pdf?rev=d8cecb7b748544bd9d0afb0e10e9a42d&amp;hash=D95CCE752F7A3629D6CD502C807A2828\">CA-6 Work Permit for minors under 16 years of age<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/documents\/leo\/CA-7Form_02_16_06_2_154115_7_364532_7_old_dleg_version_674721_7.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CA-7 Work Permit for minors 16 to 17 years of age<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"district-thin-rounded-leaf-heading\">Instructions<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Section I<\/strong> must be completed by the student and parent\/guardian. All areas must be completed before returning to the school.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Section II<\/strong> must be completed by the employer. All areas must be completed. Job duties and hours of employment must be completed and be within guidelines as listed on the backside of the work permit form. If hours of work are outside regular allotted hours, then the employer must attach a Department of Labor deviation form with the current expiration date.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Section III<\/strong> Once Sections I and II are completely filled out.
