{"id":45361,"date":"2018-08-16T12:10:16","date_gmt":"2018-08-16T16:10:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fhps.net\/?page_id=45361"},"modified":"2021-11-12T15:07:54","modified_gmt":"2021-11-12T20:07:54","slug":"faq","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.fhps.net\/departments\/transportation\/faq\/","title":{"rendered":"Student Transportation Frequently Asked Questions"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"su-box su-box-style-default\" id=\"\" style=\"border-color:#00032a;border-radius:4px\"><div class=\"su-box-title\" style=\"background-color:#1b365d;color:#fff;border-top-left-radius:2px;border-top-right-radius:2px\">Is Forest Hills required to transport my child to and from school?<\/div><div class=\"su-box-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"border-bottom-left-radius:2px;border-bottom-right-radius:2px\">School districts are not required to transport general education students. \u00a0If a school district elects to provide transportation, it must comply with statute <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/(S(qffusuuutvabausxt4tx1lhn))\/mileg.aspx?page=GetObject&amp;objectname=mcl-380-1321\">MCL 380.1321<\/a>.\u00a0Under Article 3 of the Revised School code, a school district is obligated to provide for the transportation of a special education student if the Individualized Educational Plan Committee has determined that the transportation is a specialized service which is included within and necessary to carry out the student\u2019s Individualized Educational Plan.<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"su-box su-box-style-default\" id=\"\" style=\"border-color:#00032a;border-radius:4px\"><div class=\"su-box-title\" style=\"background-color:#1b365d;color:#fff;border-top-left-radius:2px;border-top-right-radius:2px\">How are bus stop locations determined and why might they change?<\/div><div class=\"su-box-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"border-bottom-left-radius:2px;border-bottom-right-radius:2px\">\nBus stops are determined based on where students live along with application of our home to stop distance parameters (see \u201chow far does my child have to walk to get to a bus stop\u201d). Stops are placed in neighborhoods, subdivisions and along public and private streets as centrally located throughout these areas and in accordance with state pupil transportation law.<\/p>\n<p>There may be a variety of circumstances that cause a change to a bus stop location. \u00a0There are legal requirements for a bus stop as provided in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/(S(elyhqg1uwv4ucrey5vjosij0))\/mileg.aspx?page=GetObject&amp;objectname=mcl-257-1855\">MCL 257.1855<\/a> such as stops being a minimum of 200 feet apart. \u00a0Other factors include student ridership, route time, and visibility. Periodically changes in stop locations are necessary due to environmental changes (trees, signs, poles or other obstructions) that impede visibility or cause other compliance issues.<br \/>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"su-box su-box-style-default\" id=\"\" style=\"border-color:#00032a;border-radius:4px\"><div class=\"su-box-title\" style=\"background-color:#1b365d;color:#fff;border-top-left-radius:2px;border-top-right-radius:2px\">How far does my child have to walk to get to a bus stop?<\/div><div class=\"su-box-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"border-bottom-left-radius:2px;border-bottom-right-radius:2px\">\nThere is not a legal requirement for maximum walking distance to a bus stop. Forest Hills uses the following distances as guidelines when establishing bus stop locations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elementary (K-6) \u00a0&#8211; 1\/2 mile<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Secondary (7-12) \u00a0&#8211; 3\/4 mile<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is important to note that there may be cases where these distances are exceeded. \u00a0Walking distances are measured along public streets and walkways using GIS map data within our routing software program. In some cases, live measurement is used to verify distances if there is a question. In such cases, measurement is done with a manual measuring device from the center of the driveway to the home using the shortest walking route to the bus stop location.<br \/>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"su-box su-box-style-default\" id=\"\" style=\"border-color:#00032a;border-radius:4px\"><div class=\"su-box-title\" style=\"background-color:#1b365d;color:#fff;border-top-left-radius:2px;border-top-right-radius:2px\">What about the safety of my child getting to and from the bus stop?<\/div><div class=\"su-box-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"border-bottom-left-radius:2px;border-bottom-right-radius:2px\">\nIt is the responsibility of the parent or legal guardian to ensure the safety of their child to, from, and while at the bus stop. \u00a0Forest Hills provides transportation as a non-mandated service and has established placement of bus stops in accordance with the requirements of the law.<br \/>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"su-box su-box-style-default\" id=\"\" style=\"border-color:#00032a;border-radius:4px\"><div class=\"su-box-title\" style=\"background-color:#1b365d;color:#fff;border-top-left-radius:2px;border-top-right-radius:2px\">Where can I find additional school transportation information?<\/div><div class=\"su-box-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"border-bottom-left-radius:2px;border-bottom-right-radius:2px\">\nAdditional transportation information may be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/mde\/0,4615,7-140-74638_38338---,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michigan Department of Education\u2019s Pupil Transportation website<\/a>\u00a0and from the following key groups and organizations that partner with or support pupil transportation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mapt.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michigan Association Pupil Transportation<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.napt.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Association for Pupil Transportation<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanschoolbuscouncil.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American School Bus Council<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/documents\/msp\/Bus_safety_flyer_400246_7.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Office of Highway Safety Planning &#8211; School Buses are Like Traffic Lights<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"parent":45555,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"page-department.php","meta":{"_genesis_hide_title":false,"_genesis_hide_breadcrumbs":false,"_genesis_hide_singular_image":false,"_genesis_hide_footer_widgets":false,"_genesis_custom_body_class":"","_genesis_custom_post_class":"","_genesis_layout":"","footnotes":""},"class_list":{"0":"post-45361","1":"page","2":"type-page","3":"status-publish","5":"entry"},"better_featured_image":null,"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.4 -
