of a Counselor<\/h3>\n<p>In accordance with the Michigan School Counselors Association, the role of the elementary counselor in Forest Hills is to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Help children develop a better understanding and acceptance of themselves.<\/li>\n<li>Help children cope with family changes.<\/li>\n<li>Help children develop decision-making and problem solving skills.<\/li>\n<li>Help children develop socially and emotionally and\u00a0to mature in their relationships with others.<\/li>\n<li>Help parents to understand their child\u2019s emotions, behaviors and learning styles, and to assist them in meeting their child\u2019s needs.<\/li>\n<li>Help school staff to understand and meet the needs of all students in intellectual, personal, social and emotional areas.<\/li>\n<li>Help parents and teachers create a positive learning\u00a0environment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"northern-rounded-leaf-heading\">Programs<\/h2>\n<p>Counselors present their programs to students in large groups, small groups, and with individuals.<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-note\"  style=\"border-color:#cbd4db;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\"><div class=\"su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"background-color:#E5EEF5;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\">\n<h3><strong>Large or Small Groups<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Many children benefit from counseling activities with others who have similar social and emotional needs.\u00a0 To help address these needs, elementary counselors provide small group activities which address the following topics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>friendship<\/li>\n<li>newcomers<\/li>\n<li>separation and divorce<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Groups are created based on student need and students will only be involved with signed parental permission.<\/em><br \/>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"su-note\"  style=\"border-color:#cbd4db;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\"><div class=\"su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"background-color:#E5EEF5;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\">\n<h3><strong>Individual Counseling<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Individual students may receive counseling for a variety of different reasons including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>friendship<\/li>\n<li>anger management<\/li>\n<li>divorce<\/li>\n<li>grief and loss<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>This is short term counseling typically resulting from a student, teacher or parent referral.<\/em><br
